The story revolves around a summer's afternoon in a remote country setting in 1943. A group of seven seven year olds are playing in the forest. Dennis Potter is a master at painting a picture for his audience. We see a fascinating glimpse into childhood and children at play, the laughter of pure joy, the uncertainty of not knowing if you’re doing the right thing and the vicious teasing that ultimately ends in tragedy. A whole range of emotions are displayed by these children over the course of this play. However, all the child characters in “Blue Remembered Hills” are played by adult actors, which adds an interesting and highly entertaining aspect to the piece. Dennis Potter chose to utilise adult bodies as he saw them as a "magnifying glass but also ... as the seismograph which could more truthfully measure the quakes and tremors of childhood's emotions" (Potter 1984).
